Y Healthy Living Center Offers Support for New Moms

Becoming a mom is a joyous time. Nevertheless, one day you might feel bold and ready, and the next day you might feel overwhelmed. Luckily, you can reach out to community resources to help guide you during this special time including the Y Healthy Living Center.

The Y Healthy Living Center offers Northeast Florida families medically integrated programs from Baptist Health at neighborhood Y’s. Now located inside the Williams Family YMCA and the Ponte Vedra Family YMCA with new locations opening in 2016, Y Healthy Living Centers offer many basic health-screening services for free as well as programs led by clinical professionals on a variety of topics.

There are several upcoming classes that may be of particular interest to expecting or new parents including Breastfeeding 101, Breastfeeding Support Groups, Multiple Miracles Classes, and Family and CPR classes. Read more about these classes below and register by visiting First Coast YMCA.

Here are just a few of the offerings:

Breastfeeding 101

Breastfeeding is a learned art for mother and baby. This class is facilitated by a Registered Nurse/Board Certified Lactation Consultant, who will explain the key elements you need to know to get breastfeeding off to the best possible start. This is a two and half hour session taught at different locations around town.

The next class takes place Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Y Healthy Living Center inside the Williams Family YMCA.

You do not have to be a YMCA member to participate. This class is open to all moms in the community, and the cost is $30.

Breastfeeding Support Group

For new mothers who are breastfeeding their infants, this free support group is an opportunity to share, encourage and learn from other moms. The group is facilitated by a Registered Nurse/Board Certified Lactation Consultant. This is the ideal class for a mother and baby to attend while on maternity leave.

The next two classes take place Sept. 22 and Oct. 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Y Healthy Living Center inside the Williams Family YMCA.

The Breastfeeding Support Group is free and open to all moms in the community. You do not have to be a YMCA member to attend.

Multiple Miracles Class

This class prepares couples for the challenges and special joys of a multiple pregnancy. The class includes videos of parents as they embark on their journey of having multiples. You will also be given information on how to set up a lactation consultation and tours of the Neonatal Intensive Care Units. This class is taught by a registered nurse.

Parents expecting multiples are encouraged to complete all education classes by 24 weeks in your pregnancy. A $30 registration fee includes 2 tickets. This class does not take the place of the other childbirth classes offered.

The next class takes place Oct. 26 at the Y Healthy Living Center in the Williams Family YMCA.

Family and Friends CPR class

This American Heart Association course will give you hands on practice for CPR/AED (automatic external defibrillator) and choke-saving skills for infant and child. Adult CPR will also be demonstrated by instructors. In addition to CPR, this class will cover injury prevention tips and child safety. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, babysitter or friend this single session will provide you with the skills that can turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one.

This course is NOT for health care providers, healthcare students or anyone in the workplace who is seeking a professional certification card.

In addition to these classes, Y Healthy Living Centers offer many basic health-screening services are free and available on a walk-up basis.
