Every night I go to great lengths to provide my kiddos and husband with a healthy meal. A protein, fruit, vegetable and usually something else a little “fun” like heart-shaped sandwiches. All to have my three-year-old take a few bites and say, “I wanna get down Mommy!” or “I don’t like this!” even though he just ate one yesterday. Not only did he not appreciate my heart-shaped sandwich I made him but he pretty much wasted his whole meal! I save as much as I can but something feels so wrong with throwing so much of it down the disposal or in the trash!
I’ve been wanting to compost for years but always thought I needed to live in the country. I imagined it would be smelly and the huge compost bin would take up too much room. So I sought out products and ideas to urban compost. I bought a cute little indoor bin that I found on Amazon. You can only compost certain things like fruits and veggies, egg shells and even dryer lint! Once your indoor compost bin is full you’ll need to empty it outside into a larger bin that will actually help create compost. There are so many sites out there to teach you ways to make it work in the space that you have.
“The waste stream out of your home can lessen by as much as 35% just by composting kitchen and yard waste!”*
Why Compost?
- I’m composting because I am planting my first ever organic garden and I want to recycle as much food waste as I can to put back into the dirt as a natural fertilizer.
- I’m using this as a learning and bonding opportunity for my kids. Make it a project and teach them how the foods they eat can turn into a great material to help plants grow!
- Landfill space is a growing concern and when you compost you can lessen that amount while also aiding in making your flowers, plants and gardens grow beautifully!
Happy composting!

This is such a great idea, Tiffany!
We tried this a while back… I think now that my toddler is older it would be worth trying again.
