The Quest For The Perfect Mascara

Make Up Mascara

I’ve tried them all! Well, a lot of them. Mascaras, that is. As a makeup artist, I’m always on the hunt for the next best mascara. Or which one will be great for my clients. From department store to drugstore, there are great ones out there. Mascara is one of the makeup products most of us can’t live without. It adds the extra bit of oomph to any look. You can’t get the lashes you want without the right tool. With all the wand shapes to choose from, the task can be daunting….but that’s why you have me. I’ve tried out a ton, so let’s figure out which one best suits your needs.

Choosing the Best Mascara for Your Lashes

First, you need to decide how you want your lashes to look. Full and voluminous or defined and lengthened? Once you decide this, you will find your optimum look for your lashes. Volumizing mascara will help you achieve a fuller, thicker lash. Lengthening formulas will help you achieve a very defined, individual lash.

Different Wand Shapes

The rule of thumb is how the wand looks is how it’s going to make your lashes look. Fat and fluffy brush = voluminous, fat and fluffy lashes. Small brush = uniform, defined and separated lashes. Want both? Create your own mascara cocktail! Use a separating formula first, then add the voluminous mascara afterwards. Make sure to wait a few seconds in between coats. This is my favorite look!

Products That Help Maximize Your Lash Potential

Before you even apply mascara, you want to include a few items into your regimen. A lash curler is one of my top beauty items, and it should be for you too. It will help make your eyes bigger just by using this one item! Put the lash curler to the base of your lash line, pump the lash curler once. As you move the lash curler towards the end of your lashes, pump it a few more times. This will create a beautifully curled lash. The industry favorite is the Shu Umera, but it’s hard to find now. I do love the Laura Mercier travel curler and Lancome lash curler

Primer is another beauty favorite. After you’ve used the lash curler, apply one coat of lash primer. This will help give you a full lash once you’ve added the mascara. You’ll see, trust me.  Lacome Oscillation primer and MAC Prep and Prime lash are perfect for this.

How to Correctly Apply Mascara

This will make a huge difference in your look. Place the wand at the base of your lash line. Wiggle it from side to side gently and then pull out towards the end of the lash. This creates a fullness to the lash line. If you don’t want to do this yourself, the Lancome Oscillation mascara will do it for you. You press the button and it vibrates while you apply the mascara. I would suggest the vibration only while applying it at the base.
