Getting Creative at The Art Garage

ArtGarageReview1My kids love art. For my son, art class at school is the highlight of his week. So when I asked them if they wanted to try an afterschool class at The Art Garage, of course the answer was YES!

We arrived at The Art Garage a few minutes before our scheduled class so the kids could look around. Monica, owner and instructor, greeted us. She was warm and friendly and the kids immediately took a liking to her. I was impressed by how well organized the tables were, with supplies all laid out, ready for eager art students.

ArtGarageReview2Once the hour long class began I took a seat in the comfy waiting room (you can choose to drop your children for class and leave, or wait for them in the waiting room). As a mom, I appreciated that the door to the studio is left open so I could periodically peek inside and see how the kids were doing.

The art project the class worked on this particular week was a picture of Grumpy Cat using pastels. Monica began with a short lesson on the color wheel, highlighting primary, secondary and complimentary colors. There were several color wheels for the children to look at and pass around.

Next up was the actual creating. Monica led the class through sketching out the cat, and the students picked which color pastels they wanted to work with, blending colors along the way. When they were finished they had messy hands, adorable pictures, and huge smiles on their faces.

On our way home I asked the kids what they liked best about the class. Cole (8) said his favorite part was “using the pastels and getting to choose which complimentary colors he wanted for his picture.” Kiley (5) said her favorite part of the class was “how Ms. Monica taught her how to draw a cat.” Both kids agreed that they’d like to take another class, or possibly attend summer camp at The Art Garage.

ArtGarageReview3The Art Garage offers a variety of classes for kids and people who used to be kids. Their art classes for kids includes many forms of art; acrylic paint on canvas, watercolor, oil pastel, soft pastel,
mixed media and clay. Intermediate classes introduce drawing and charcoal as well. The Art Garage also offers music classes, as well as art classes for adults. In addition, The Art Garage can host your private event for a birthday party, ladies’ night out, family get together, or any other reason you can think of to get together and paint on canvas.

Thank you Art Garage for sponsoring this post and having my kids try out a class! All opinions are my own.
