Get Organized for a Summer of Fun!

Are you ready for summer? No? Well it’s coming… in just a few weeks the kids will be out of school, and summer will officially have started. I love having my kids home for the summer. We plan lots of fun activities around town and take advantage of many of the free and cheap things going on in Jacksonville.

Unfortunately, sorting through all the information out there and keeping it organized can be a daunting task. Well not anymore. A few years ago I put together a Summer Binder to help me stay organized. It was such a success that I’ve continued to put one together every summer since then.

So, where do you begin? First, start with a binder and some page protectors. I use the same ones year after year, I just tuck them away in a closet when school starts up again. I use Word to create blank calendars for June, July and August. Then start filling the calendars in with all the fun activities you want to do with your kids this summer. I use additional page protectors behind each monthly calendar to corral paperwork I might need for that month. This includes camp registrations, vacation confirmations, and special events we might want to attend.

In addition to each monthly tab, I have a category labeled “on-going.” This is where I put copies of anything that happens throughout the summer such as movie schedules for local $1 movies, library program hand outs, reading logs and also any coupons, groupons, or vouchers we might use over the summer for fun activities.

Free or very cheap activities are available all over Jacksonville throughout the summer. Luckily, the Jacksonville Moms Blog has a directory with tons of free events listed. Also, be sure to follow us on Facebook to keep up-to-date with all the latest summer happenings in Jacksonville.

These are just a few of the resources I utilize for my kids, but there are many more out there. Check with your church, gym, YMCA, and parks department. There are always freebie adventures waiting to happen. It may seem early to start planning out the summer, but I assure you those weeks will fly by and before you know you’ll be packing backpacks and lunch boxes, getting ready for the first day of school.

As an added bonus, I’ve created some blank calendar templates for those of you who want to get a jump start on your summer planning. You can print out blank calendars for June, July, and August and then write in all your fun summer plans. So get planning, your summer adventure awaits!

  1. I really like this and I have something similar for magazine clipping and recipes so why didn’t I think of that for summer. I’d love to know any more details, though, about activities you have found that are cheap/free around Jax/Jax Beach. That would be really helpful. Thanks!
