Prepared to Fight: Education & Training With the Women’s Defense Company

This self-defense class review is brought to you by the Women's Defense Company.

When it comes to being attacked, you probably think, “That will never happen to me.” Of course, not. No one wants it to happen to them, but in reality, it does and it could happen. One out of three women have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by a partner. The CDC reports that one in five U.S. women have been raped in their lifetime. Luckily, we have the self-defense resources and tools right here in Jacksonville to help keep ourselves from being an attack statistic, and instead, be an attack survivor, should we ever find ourselves in a compromising situation.

From the life-size “Bob” dummies just asking to be punched to the graffiti on the walls that scream “Girls Rule,” the Women’s Defense Company makes you feel empowered when you first step foot in the door. I, for one, was ready to throw down and thought I knew enough to get me through a bad situation. Boy, was I wrong… big time!

The Women’s Defense Company in the Bartram Trail Business Park provides realistic, effective and trusted self-defense instruction and tactics. Chris, a former police officer, and his team walked us through the tools we have every single day — our own bodies — that we can use to fight back if ever attacked. The biggest lesson I learned was the reality of time. An attack can happen in a split second, and you will not have time to think — only react. Forget pepper spray, who’s got time for that when you are being attacked? And I thought that my taser was a sure thing… wrong again. Chris shared very good points on why we need to be able to fight back at the exact moment an attack happens and not waste precious time searching through our purse for a “tool.”

In class, we took turns practicing the defense moves we were taught and with each one, I found myself growing more and more confident. I could also see my friends channeling their inner Super Women, becoming more aggressive and powerful. These moms are FIERCE, and I loved it! These ladies are not ones you would want to mess with, especially after this highly educational WDC course.

I’m so grateful for the time that the Women’s Defense Company spent with us. They could easily become the reason why one of us does get away from a potential attacker. It’s sad, but true; I hate to even think about it, let alone write about it. With the training from the Jacksonville WDC, I feel that women can absolutely be better prepared with the help of mastering just a few kick-ass moves.

This experience with WDC has changed my life, seriously. I’m now far more aware of my surroundings. Along with my guard, I keep my head up (not looking down at my phone), especially with my children. My fear of being attacked will always be with me, but my heart and mind are ready to fight and ready to survive any attack that comes my way.

Put yourself first, and take one of the courses. Get a group of your friends together and learn a few moves that could truly save your life. You will feel ready to defend yourself against any attacker with the help from this great team of instructors.

I hope we never need to use the self-defense moves we learned in that hour, but I’m so glad we now know what to do if we were attacked. The thought is scary, and I can’t thank the Women’s Defense Company enough. You have made these fierce mamas confident, strong and ready to fight!

A Jersey Girl at heart, business owner and graphic designer, Sherri is a mommy of two and active volunteer. A native to Jax Beach since 1992, thanks to her father’s service in the US Navy, Sherri’s roots are firmly set in Jacksonville. A Flagler College grad, she knew she wanted to be her own boss and a SAHM, so she created Sassy Ink Design Studio in 2009. She met her husband in the Florida State Football Locker Room (don’t let your mind wander, she was on a tour) and was engaged within 3 months! For a short time they lived in Destin, FL where they had their two children, but missed Jacksonville so much, they came back to raise their family in the best city in the south! Over the past 14 years, Sherri has competed in, coached and judged pageants across the state. Currently, she is Mrs. Jacksonville International, but don’t let that fool you. She kick boxes, loves football, camping and can change the oil and a tire on a car. Obsessed with Christmas, you can find Sherri designing in her home office with her snowman mug, bullet coffee and Nat King Cole playing in the background.
