With Halloween just around the corner, you can smell the sweets in the air. I’m sure your kids are already practicing their “trick or treats” in hopes of getting something good to eat. I know my daughter, Avery, is! I have been on the search for some tasty, fun, not-so-spooky Halloween treats for our little gal’s 4th birthday celebration. Avery’s birthday is right before Halloween and yes, she ditched the princess party theme this year (with a little coaxing I might add) and opted for a Halloween costume party. Her dad and I were thrilled, and thus my quest had begun!
I do not consider myself to be a very creative, crafty person by any means. Sometimes I get lucky and surprise myself, but generally not so much. This is why I, like many others, look to our friends at Pinterest for ideas for just about anything and everything. So of course, that was where I started, and boy did I hit the jackpot! I found some amazing treats that are kid-approved (Avery helped me choose) and yummy for the mommies and daddies too. And they are not all chalked full of sugar!
There were so many great ideas to put a little spookiness and fun on any Halloween party table. I narrowed it down to a few that are a must for our little lady’s bash! And the kiddos can help out too, which is always a plus! Here are my top picks.
Candy Apple Monsters
A Halloween party of any sort would not be complete without candy apples! So, of course, I chose Candy Apple Monsters, and my inspiration was from polkadotchair.com. Not only were these fun to make but were quite easy. All you need are apples, lollipop sticks, caramel dipping sauce (I made my own using the Kraft caramel squares-recipe on the back of bag), and candy melts in different colors (I used Wilton’s). Don’t forget your body-part decorating accessories like candy eyeballs, monster hands, and any other candies depending on what spooky little monsters you’re making. And just let your imagination flow. I chose to make Frankensteins, bats, ghosts, and Jack-o-lanterns. They turned out so cute! Avery loved helping me stick on the eyeballs and couldn’t wait to take a great big bite!
A few tips:
- You can use pretzel twists to make the bat wings and Frankenstein’s ears and neck plugs. Just cover them in the candy melts. Also, black licorice would make great spider legs.
- Make sure to let the candy melts dry before decorating, especially if using another color.
Mummy Hot Dogs
These yummy little guys are a cinch to make. And who doesn’t like the classic “pigs in a blanket” but mummified?? Dab on a little yellow mustard or ketchup for eyes and you have a spooktastic treat for all to enjoy.
Halloween Fruit Kabobs
I wanted to add a little something with fruit to the party mix amongst all the candies and sweets. These simple, adorable fruit kabobs are a perfect way. All you need is a fruit of your choice, wooden skewers (I recommend the dull tips for young children), and any plastic toy ring, such as a spider or bat. And voilà, you have a nutritious snack with a bonus ring.
Pumpkin Veggie Tray
Ok, so I had to come up with at least one veggie snack to make this party complete. A Pumpkin Veggie Tray did the trick. Just arrange baby carrots on a platter in the shape of a pumpkin, use cucumber slices to make a mouth, and broccoli florets for a stem. Then add your favorites dips in small bowls or ramekins for the eyes and nose. And there you have it–a fun, festive display of veggies to fill those hungry tummies.
So if you’re looking for some spooktacular ideas that your guests are sure to love, here are some great options. And, I was able to get in some fruits and veggies too…BONUS!!
