How Florida Does Fall (Fashion): Transitioning Your Summer Styles

fall fashion

We all know it’s pretty hot in Florida the majority of the year, and we probably wish we could wear sweaters and scarves and jackets a little bit longer or sooner than we really can.  I admit, I am guilty of wearing sweaters a little too early, say when the temperature is 79 degrees! But it’s technically fall, right? Using these three basic pieces — white jeans, a summer dress and denim shorts — will help you transition them into fall, as most of you likely have similar items in your closet. These pieces are staples for anyone’s closet, whether you are a working mom or stay-at-home mom.

White Jeans

Everyone always asks the question — can I wear white jeans after Labor Day? I say, absolutely! Especially in Florida. When we push our tanks and sleeveless tops to the side of our closet and bring out our long-sleeve tops and sweaters, don’t put those white jeans away. You can pair them with a lightweight sweater and sandals for chilly walks on the beach and a pretty blouse for date night or brunch with girlfriends. My favorite style is throwing on a easy sweater, like I did below. This is a basic off-the-shoulder sweater that I converted to a one-shoulder. I paired it with my best high-heel sandals, ball-drop earrings and a cheetah-print clutch for some sass.

Get the Look: Toothpick Jean, $98, J.Crew; Flecked Sweater, $59.50, Loft; Ball-Drop Earrings, $6.50, Target; Zip-Top Cheetah-Print Clutch, $16, Old Navy; Ray-Ban Aviator Sunglasses, $153, Shopbop; Jessica Simpson Sandals, $70, DSW (similar). Other similar shoe options: Steve Madden Sandals, $80, Nordstrom; Low-Block Heel Pumps, $28, Target.

Denim Shorts

While it’s still warm, we can definitely continue to wear our favorite shorts! Try pairing them with your favorite plaid shirt, vest and sneakers to make it feel like you are dressing for fall. Or you can just lower your thermostat a little bit to get that chilly feel. These denim shorts are my go-to all summer, and I’m super excited to wear them for a few more weeks while it’s still warm. They are my most worn shorts! If you know me, you know I love a good vest — whether it be a puffer vest or this military vest I styled here.  I picked up this vest a few weeks ago and have been wearing it nonstop. It’s so lightweight to wear with a tee now for warm weather, and I will be pairing it with sweaters when it gets cooler. Versatility is also what I look for when buying an item. If I can’t wear an item at least two or three different ways, then I will most likely pass on it. Wear this outfit while you chase your children around on the weekends or to any of those fun fall festivals coming up! You just might see me wearing this soon at a pumpkin patch with our little guy.

Get the Look: Denim Shorts, $29.50, J.Crew Factory; High-Rise Denim Shorts, $79.50, J.Crew (similar high-rise option); Military Vest, $30, Target; Relaxed Plaid Shirt, $24, Old Navy (similar); Drapey Flannel Shirt, $55, Gap (similar); Slip-On Sneakers, $25, Target; Crossbody Bag, $50, Sole Society; Ray-Ban Aviator Sunglasses, $153, Shopbop.

Summer Dress

Ever wonder how to get more out of your summer dresses? My favorite way to wear them into the fall is by simply putting a long-sleeve tee over them. I picked up this tee at the Old Navy in Town Center for $10! They come in seven different colors, and I love the pocket detail. Knotted sweaters and tees are a popular look right now; throw on an oversized tee and knot it how you like it. So easy, right? I think little tricks like this help you change up the same ol’ outfits to get more wear out of something you may reach for all the time. I also love the idea of wearing a heavier sweater over a dress when it’s colder with leggings and boots — it’s a great work option for a more casual office or for church. You can even switch out the booties for heels. So cute!

Get the Look: Crew-Neck Tee Dress, $10, Old Navy; Boyfriend Tee, $15, Old Navy; Block-Heel Booties, $36, Old Navy; Reversible Tote, $48, Nordstrom.

Now, of course I don’t wear these types of outfits everyday. If you see me around town running errands like shopping at Trader Joe’s or picking our son up from school, I am most likely in leggings and tennis shoes. Although, I do find I am my best self when I am wearing something that makes me feel put together with my hair fixed and a little makeup on. It just gives me the confidence I need to tackle the day, and you never know who you might run into! I also believe you don’t need to break the bank to have a cute wardrobe. Most of these pieces came from Target, Old Navy and Loft (at 40-50% off). Finding staple pieces that you can wear year-round and season after season will give you some bang for your buck!
